Can Hormone Imbalance Cause Inflammation?

Unfortunately yes, hormone imbalance can cause inflammation. Our hormones work hand in hand with our immune system. When they’re not working as they should this can negatively affect immunity, causing all sorts of autoimmune issues.

Our body needs inflammation sometimes as an acute response to things like injuries. Inflammation occurs when you cut your finger and it actually helps the healing process.

But over time, inflammation with no acute cause can become chronic. This means that rather than inflammation happening only when it’s useful and necessary, the inflammation becomes a long-term issue that’s hard to fix. The good news is that there are ways to rebalance your hormones before this becomes a serious issue for your wellbeing, which we will discuss a little bit later in this article.

What Hormones Cause Inflammation and Pain?

Estrogen and cortisol are two of the hormones associated with long-term inflammation, pain, and other unpleasant symptoms. Cortisol is released by the body during stressful situations. If you’ve ever been woken up in the middle of the night by a loud noise and found it difficult to get back to sleep, that’s because your body is pumped full of cortisol.

In the moments when it’s needed, cortisol can be invaluable. The problem comes when your body releases too much cortisol over a long period of time and the hormone becomes problematic.

Having an imbalance of estrogen, one of the hormones involved in the menstrual cycle and reproduction, can produce all sorts of unwanted symptoms. When your body’s estrogen is too high, you might experience mood swings, tender breasts, weight gain (especially around your stomach area), adult acne, and fatigue. Over time this can cause chronic inflammation.

Hormonal Inflammation Symptoms

If you’re not sure whether you’re experiencing hormonal inflammation, check for the following symptoms. If you’re worried that the cause might be something more serious or acute, consult with a medical professional.

  • Weight gain. Weight gain that can’t be explained by typical causes such as eating more and moving less is often a result of hormonal imbalance. Look out for weight gain around the stomach area especially.
  • Changes in mood. If you find yourself feeling sadder, more anxious, or grumpier without a clear cause, this can point to a hormone imbalance.
  • Fatigue and tiredness. It’s natural to feel tired if you’re not sleeping properly. But if there’s been no change to your sleeping routine, and you feel tired and fatigued anyway, this could point to an imbalance of hormones like cortisol and estrogen.
  • Skin changes. Changes in your skin texture and appearance, such as an increase in spots, might point to inflammation caused by hormone imbalance.
  • Brain fog. Brain fog happens when you struggle to concentrate or remember things. Your brain might literally feel ‘foggy’, and it could point to hormonal inflammation.
  • Trouble sleeping. If you’re struggling to sleep regularly and there’s no obvious explanation (such as drinking too much caffeine or jet lag), hormone-related inflammation could be to blame.
  • Tender breasts. Tender breasts (outside of pregnancy or menstruating) can be a sign of an estrogen imbalance.
  • Changes in menstrual cycle. If you still menstruate and aren’t menopausal, a change to your menstrual cycle might point to changes in the levels of estrogen in your body.

How To Balance Hormones To Reduce Inflammation

The good news is that you can balance your hormones to reduce inflammation without having to immediately resort to medication. Try the following tips to rebalance hormones and help your inflammation issues subside.

Keep Stress to a Minimum

Having constant stress can cause hormone imbalance, meaning you can suffer from inflammation as a result. Setting boundaries, keeping a journal, and meditating regularly are just a few of the ways you can reduce chronic stress in your life.

Eat Hormone Balancing Foods

What you eat has a huge impact on your hormones. Prioritize eating more hormone balancing foods and fewer of the foods that cause hormone imbalances. Foods like eggs, lean proteins, cruciferous vegetables, and low-sugar fruits are great for rebalancing hormones.

Move Regularly

Exercise is great for everything from longevity to rebalancing those pesky hormones. You don’t have to go to the gym every day, simply moving more by walking when possible, stretching, and incorporating some resistance exercises into your routine can make a huge difference.
