What Makes These Tuna Patties Paleo-Friendly?

To make tuna patties paleo-friendly, the key is using whole, unprocessed ingredients that align with paleo guidelines. Traditional tuna patties often include breadcrumbs, flour, or cheese, which should be avoided on a paleo diet. Instead these paleo tuna patties use almond flour as a grain-free binder and eggs to hold everything together.

Canned tuna is naturally paleo as long as it’s packed in water or olive oil without added preservatives. Fresh herbs, diced onions, garlic, and lemon juice add flavor without relying on processed sauces or dairy. For cooking, avocado oil is used instead of vegetable oil.

Paleo Tuna Patties Ingredients

For the tuna patties:

  • 2 cans of white albacore tuna in water
  • 1 egg
  • 1/8 cup almond flour
  • ½ of white onion diced small
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 2 lemons
  • Fresh parsley

For the lemon asparagus:

  • 1 bunch of fresh asparagus, ends removed
  • 1 lemon zested
  • 1 lemon cut in round slices about a ¼ inch thick
  • 2 Tbsp white onion minced
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • Avocado oil

Instructions

  1. Combine all the ingredients for the tuna patty in a medium size bowl. Mash everything together with a large fork.
  2. Add salt and pepper.
  3. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat on the stove. Drizzle the pan with avocado oil. Be careful not to put too much or they will be soggy patties.
  4. Separate the tuna into four patties.
  5. Fry on each side until golden brown about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  6. Place on a paper towel to blot the oil.
  7. Squeeze lemon on top to serve.
  8. You can serve with complaint bottled tarter sauce or make your own paleo tartar sauce.

A couple of notes about this recipe. First, you can make this with salmon too. Just substitute canned salmon for the tuna. And second, I find theses patties are yummy with a vinaigrette dressing too. I serve them on top of bed of greens this way.

    For the lemon asparagus:

    1. On the stove, heat a large frying pan on medium heat.
    2. Add everything for the asparagus and cook for about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    3. Cook longer for less crisp asparagus.
