Yoga is renowned for being a style of exercise that’s perfect for your body, mind, and spirit. It is great for improving flexibility, boosting balance, and upping your stamina (in a way that doesn’t leave you too out of breath). In my biased opinion, the decision to start a regular yoga practice is a no-brainer. But, you might have asked this question:

Can you teach yourself yoga?

As a certified RYT-200 yoga instructor I am here to answer this question and provide my insight on whether you should teach yourself yoga at home using online videos and resources or attend in-person classes.

And a hint before we dive in, the correct answer is – there’s no correct answer! It really depends on the person. But let’s get started discussing some of the reasons you might want to learn yoga on your own at home and how to establish if it’s right for you.

Can You Teach Yourself Yoga (Learn Yoga On Your Own)?

Yes, you can definitely teach yourself yoga at home and learn by yourself, provided you have the right resources. By following an online yoga course, you can become a yoga expert from the comfort of your own front room without the expense or time needed to learn at a group or in-person class.

While most people picture themselves learning yoga through an in-person class, learning by yourself is increasingly popular thanks to the proliferation of online courses. Teaching yourself yoga will involve some form of online resources in which a yoga teacher takes you through the poses and the best ways to approach them, including modifications.

This way, you can learn yoga on your own time. You’ll also need some equipment, namely a yoga mat, yoga clothing (such as leggings and a sports bra). Plus, you might want some extras like a yoga block or yoga towel.

There’s no rule as to how many times you need to practice yoga to improve your skills. A good goal though is to aim for 3-5 times per week. This leaves some rest days to allow your muscles to relax. Likewise, there’s no golden number of minutes that will make you an expert yogi. As a general rule, a good yoga session should last somewhere between 15 and 45 minutes.

Don’t overexert yourself if you’re new to yoga. The best plan of action is to start smaller to allow your muscles to become accustomed. Then, work your way up to doing it for longer, more days per week, and taking on more advanced poses.

Reasons To Teach Yourself Yoga At Home

If you aren’t sure whether in-person or at-home practice is for you, here is a list of just some of the advantages of teaching yourself yoga from home.

1 – Convenience

Driving to a yoga practice at a designated time isn’t right for everyone. Whether you have commitments, a tight schedule or the location is inconvenient, learning yoga from home doesn’t come with any of these issues. Instead of having to find a class that’s in your neighborhood or in tune with your working hours, learning from home however and whenever you want can be more convenient.

2 – Less Expensive

While most online courses or videos aren’t free, they tend to be less expensive than in-person classes. Yoga isn’t the cheapest form of exercise. If you’re on a budget, learning from home can be a more affordable option.

This will also allow you to spend more on yoga accessories to complement your practice. If you’ve got your eye on a fancy yoga mat, opting for online practice will help you afford it.

3 – Practice at Your Own Pace

When you sign up for an in-person yoga class, you have to improve and try new skills at the pace that the teacher and the group set. If you want to move slower or more quickly than the rest of the group or your ability is slightly out of sync with the others, class can be difficult. By learning by yourself online, you can move at your own pace.

If you feel you’re improving at an impressive pace, you can go to more advanced moves. If you feel you need to take it slower, you can repeat the same classes and poses without the pressure to move on to something new with the rest of the group.

4 – Less Commuting Time

Depending on where you attend yoga classes, you might have to walk, drive, or take public transport. When you learn from home, the commute is decidedly shorter. Just to your yoga space and back! That means more time to do other things that are important to you too.

5 – Home Comforts

When you practice yoga from home, you have access to all of your favorite home comforts such as your favorite morning smoothie and snuggle breaks with your dog. You can also set the temperature and keep the environment exactly as you’d like it. These home comforts can make your yoga practice a more pleasant experience.

Disadvantages Of Learning Yoga On Your Own (Reasons To Learn In Person With a Yoga Teacher)

As with any method of learning a new skill, there are benefits and downsides. The same goes for learning yoga on your own. There are disadvantages you’ll need to consider before you commit. Here are some of the downsides of teaching yourself yoga, and the reasons you might prefer to learn with a teacher.

1 – Lack of Social Element

When you practice from home, you miss out on the social element that comes with going to a class. By practicing yoga in a group, not only do you meet new people, but you also enjoy the support and camaraderie that comes with working out with others. Yoga in a group can be an affirming experience when shared with others, while working out by yourself can be lonely.

2 – Less Support From the Teacher

When you attend in-person classes, your yoga teacher is your on-site expert who can talk you through your practice. He or she can correct your form, help you adjust poses to your ability level, and generally ensure you’re doing yoga correctly.

3 – Less Accountability

When you sign up for in-person classes, somebody is expecting you there. Additionally, you usually pay in advance. You might have made friends and told them about your yoga goals, or you might have promised to go with a friend.

All of these factors increase accountability, making it more likely that you’ll actually attend your yoga sessions. If you’re somebody who struggles with sticking to things, having accountability by going to a group session can help you boost your willpower, therefore improving your yoga technique more quickly.

1 – Online Course

In my (humble) opinion, one of the best possible ways to learn yoga is through an online course – especially one you can follow on your own time without a set schedule. Online courses come with tons of resources to help you perfect your yoga practice, including in-depth guides on poses and workouts for all abilities.

Online courses tend to be considerably cheaper than in-person courses too. If you’re keen to save money they’re a great option. All in all, an online course is probably the easiest way to teach yourself yoga, especially if you’re willing to spend a little money on it.

One of the downsides of YouTube videos is that they aren’t tailored to the viewer. Plus, you can end up sitting through tons of ads if you don’t have a YouTube Premium account.

But, if you’re simply looking for an accessible way to improve yoga from the comfort of your own home, watching yoga creators on YouTube is an effective way to do it. A great and very popular yoga YouTube channel I recommend is Yoga With Adriene.

3 – Workout Videos

Okay, so admittedly this is a super old-school way of working out. But if you still have a DVD player, why not go full 80s and invest in a yoga DVD? These videos usually have a retro edge, which makes them all the more entertaining.

You can’t perfect your entire yoga practice with just one video, but you can use it to complement other techniques of learning or simply as your entry point into yoga. 4 – Books

Reading yoga books (preferably with images of yoga poses) can be a great way to learn yoga at home. Since you can’t see somebody actually performing the movement in real-time, books are a little less useful than videos. But they can definitely support your existing yoga practice or give you a deeper insight into tips for making the most out of your yoga sessions.
